General Advice for using Paintsmiths Universal Car Touch Up Paint

-
Do not apply paint to your vehicle in direct sunlight.

Step 1: Shake the Container Thoroughly
Shake the bottle or pen for at least 2 minutes to thoroughly combine the paint. If you are using a metallic paint, such as our Silver paint, this may take a little longer as the metallic flakes tend to settle over time. Placing the paint in a warm (but not hot) place for an hour will make the paint easier to shake.
Test the paint on a small and discreet area of the car to check the colour match. Let it dry for about 20 minutes to see how it appears once dried.
Step 2: Surface Preparation
Clean the area where you will be applying the car touch up paint to ensure that no dust, dirt, wax, or polish remains. An IPA or Panel wipe will give the best surface preparation, although a good clean with car shampoo will also create a clean surface to apply the paint. If the scratch or chip is particularly deep, it is recommended (but not essential) to apply a primer first. The primer will help ensure proper adhesion and prevent rust. If applying primer, allow 30 minutes to dry before applying paint.
Step 3: Paint Application
Using the brush tip, apply thin layers of paint to the damaged area, ensuring smooth and even strokes. Be careful not to apply too much paint at once to avoid clumps. Multiple thin layer work much better than one thick layer.
If you have purchased the 20ml Pen and wish to use the needle-point applicator, gently place the nib into the scratch or chip, allowing it to sit in the damaged area and squeeze the pen to release a controlled amount of paint. This ensures that only the damaged area is covered. Avoid applying fresh paint on top of any existing paint to prevent the repair from looking uneven.

Step 4: Drying Time and Additional Coats
Drying time is crucial for achieving a smooth, professional finish. After the first coat, let the paint dry for at least 60 minutes. If a second coat is necessary to achieve full coverage, wait for the first coat to fully dry before applying another. Ambient temperature can significantly affect drying time, and therefore during colder periods, the paint can take up to 4 hours to dry.
To assist the drying process, a hair dryer on a heat setting will speed up the curing time. Allow the alloy wheel touch up paint to cure for a full 24 hours before you proceed with any additional steps like applying a lacquer (not required for our all-in-one paint) or polishing.
