How to use your Paintsmiths Rust Converter
Paintsmiths Rust Converter is a non-hazardous, water-based rust converter that is easy to apply by brush. The following instructions will assist in achieving the best results and using the product safely.

Preparation
- Stir thoroughly before use. Do not dilute.
- Remove loose rust, scale, and dirt with a wire brush. Reduce sharp rust pits. Scrape away blistered paint down to solid rust.
- Important: Do not remove all hard rust—Paintsmiths Rust Converter reacts with it chemically to create a robust finish.
- Clean off any acid, alkali, grease, oil, or chemicals using a detergent wash, then rinse thoroughly with cold, clean water. Ensure these areas are fully covered with Paintsmiths Rust Converter
- Failure to remove dirt, grease or oil will affect the effectiveness of the rust conversion process.
Application
- Apply 2 to 3 thin coats using the supplied brush.
- Allow approximately 30 minutes between coats, ensuring each coat is dry before applying the next.
- The product goes on white and gradually turns dark as it reacts with rust.
- Lightly cross-brush for 30 seconds after application, then allow to dry.
- Allow 24 hours to fully cure (depending on weather) before applying primer or topcoat.
Note: Excess product can stain surrounding paintwork—remove immediately.
Finish & Paint Compatibility
Once cured, Paintsmiths Rust Converter forms a durable, ready-to-paint surface and can dry to a high-gloss finish. It is self-priming and compatible with many topcoat systems. While a quality primer is recommended for best results, it’s not essential. Always test paint compatibility first.
